Requirements

A client of CIRITE’s had several software modules that they wished to complete and release to market. The number of developers they had was inadequate to cover the requirement to work on these proposed modules and work on their current Enterprise suite of products.

The Proposal

CIRITE proposed that they could provide a dedicated development team, who would be at the client’s disposal, to develop one of these proposed modules. If successful they would continue to act as a backend development team dedicated to the client. The client had no experience of working with an offshore development team and so CIRITE proposed a proof of concept over a period of 12 months to demonstrate the benefits of this approach.

The Benefits

  • Cost
  • Team and talent optimisation
  • Communication and availability

Cost

The cost of hiring the development team in the UK, at current market rates, for one year would have been approximately £185,000. This cost is before any overheads for HR and infrastructure per head. The team put together by CIRITE consisted of:

  • 1 x Senior software developer with 5+ years of experience
  • 2 x Software developers with 2 -5 years experience
  • 2 x GUI (Graphical User Interface) developers with 2- 5 years experience
  • 1 x Junior software developer with 1-2 years experience

CIRITE was able to provide the team at almost 50% of that cost.

Team and talent optimisation

CIRITE was able to build the development team in a few weeks. This was achieved by being able to select the right candidates for each position from a resource pool of engineers available to CIRITE in Sri Lanka. The selected candidates were then presented to the client to approve their suitability. The team were selected with the understanding that if they were not suitable to the client that CIRITE would change the team members where necessary. As the project requirements phase progressed the nature of the development became of a more a graphical nature and CITRITE, working with the client, proposed that the team structure was changed to be more cost effective and beneficial to them demonstrating our flexibility and ability to provide the right resources to suit the needs of the job.

The client also had the benefit and use of several senior consultants that worked for CIRITE who were able to pool together their knowledge to solve more difficult problems and issues that the team faced.

Communication and Availability

The developers in Sri Lanka were able to complete assignments that had been assigned from the previous day, and be ready to present work completed by the time the UK team were starting work. They used a variety of methods to communicate including email, MSN and a dedicated VOIP number in Sri Lanka using a UK geographical number so as to keep those all important phone costs down for the client. Working in conjunction with the client’s existing developers meant that the development process ran for almost 14 hours.

Conclusion

CIRITE made more than a 50% cost saving for the client in the development of the proof of concept project. The clients’s UK based developers are presently completing testing of the executable file that has been created for the project. The team also undertook the development of the client’s new corporate website, which is also at its final editing stage. The development team has started to develop further projects for the client, and CIRITE are looking to continue and develop their partnership with them.
